About our shelter system
Emergency Shelter is an important part of the homeless system of care. But in a Housing First system, shelter by itself is not a goal. Instead, shelter must be seen as a pathway to housing.
The County of Marin, with our partners, offers temporary shelter assistance resources to those experiencing homelessness. Our primary provider for shelter services is Homeward Bound of Marin, which operates Jonathan's Place and New Beginnings Center for single adults as well as their Family Center for families. In the Housing First Model Shelter is often the first step in a pathway to housing.
Shelter is a primary response to the housing crisis as a short term place to sleep and settle urgent living needs. Marin shelters operate on a housing-focused model. As long as an individual is working towards the goal of permanent housing they will be able to utilize the shelter as long as it takes.
