Summary

The 2017 Marin County Homeless Count & Survey Executive Summary reports that 1,117 people were experiencing homelessness, with 63% unsheltered and 37% sheltered

About 35% were homeless for the first time, while 64% had been without housing for more than a year. The largest age group was 25–59 years (70%), with smaller shares under 18 (11%), ages 18–24 (11%), and 60+ (8%). Subpopulations included 329 chronically homeless individuals, 94 veterans, 75 families with children, and 127 unaccompanied youth

The majority identified as men (68%), and 10% identified as LGBTQ. Racially, 64% were White, 15% Black or African American, and 18% Hispanic/Latino. Economic hardship (42%), substance use, and mental health issues were the top causes of homelessness

Health concerns were significant, with 60% reporting a disabling condition and high rates of psychiatric, substance use, and chronic health problems. About 69% received some form of government assistance, while only 15% were employed. To obtain housing, respondents most often cited the need for rental assistance (67%) and more affordable housing (65%).
