Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal is California’s health program that gives free or low-cost medical, dental, and vision care to eligible residents.

What It Is

Medi-Cal is California’s Medicaid program. It provides free or low-cost health care, including medical, dental, and vision services, for people who qualify.

Why It Matters

Medi-Cal helps people get the care they need to stay healthy. It covers checkups, prescriptions, hospital care, pregnancy care, mental health services, and emergencies—often at little or no cost.

Who Qualifies

You may qualify for Medi-Cal if you:

  • Live in California
  • Have a low income (based on household size)
  • Are a child, adult, senior, pregnant person, or person with a disability

Some immigrants may also qualify, even without full immigration status.

How to Apply

You can apply for Medi-Cal at any time:

  • Online: Apply at BenefitsCal or Covered California
  • In person: Visit your county human services office
  • By phone: Call your county or Covered California
  • By mail: Send in a paper application

There is no cost to apply.

How You Get Your Benefits

If approved, you get a Golden State Advantage EBT card with your monthly benefits.
You use this card to pay for food where it’s accepted — in stores, some markets, and online. (LA County DPSS)
