Find medical care

Need to know

  • In California, most people must have health insurance or may have to pay a tax penalty.
  • You may qualify for free or low-cost health coverage.
  • If you already have insurance, you should choose a primary care provider (doctor).
  • You can still get care at low-cost clinics if you do not have insurance.
  • Costs and services are different at each clinic and plan.
  • If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

Before you start

  • Gather basic information, like your income and how many people live in your household
  • Have any documents you have, like an ID or pay stubs (not always required)
  • Have your insurance card if you have coverage

What to do

  • See if you qualify for free or low-cost health insurance
  • Get help signing up for a plan
  • If you have insurance, find a doctor in your plan’s network
  • Find a clinic if you need care now

  6. If you have insurance:
    1. Call your health plan or visit their website

    3. Choose or change your primary care provider (PCP)
