Get certified as an emergency medical technician (EMT)

Need to know

  • Fees: $15 for Marin County certification plus $75 for the State, for a total of $90.
  • Processing time: Most cards are issued within 1 to 2 weeks. Per policy, the Agency will issue a card within 45 days of receiving a complete application.
  • Accepted payment methods: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and check or money order payable to “County of Marin.”
  • Submission method: Email only. Faxed, mailed, and dropped-off paperwork is no longer accepted.

Before you start

Gather the following before you apply:

  • A current and valid National Registry EMT certificate, or a current and valid California or out-of-state EMT certificate.
  • A completed EMT Skills Verification Form (if needed, see the list of Bay Area/Northern California entities that offer skills verification sign-off).
  • Payment of $90 (Marin $15 + State $75). You can call 415-473-6871 to pay by credit card after submitting your application.
  • Completed criminal history background check (DOJ/FBI Livescan fingerprints). Use the Marin County EMS Livescan form.
  • You must not have any disqualifying criminal convictions as defined under Health and Safety Code Division 2.5, Chapter 7, Section 1798.200.

What to do

Apply for initial EMT certification

  1. Complete the EMT application form.
  2. Attach a copy of your current and valid National Registry EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic certificate, or a California or out-of-state EMT certificate.
  3. Complete your DOJ/FBI Livescan fingerprint background check using the Marin County EMS Livescan form.
  4. Email your completed application and supporting documents in PDF format to EMS Certifications.
  5. Pay the $90 fee. You can call 415-473-6871 to provide a credit card number after your application is received.
  6. Wait for your certification card. Most cards arrive within 1 to 2 weeks.

Renew your EMT certification

  1. Complete the EMT renewal application form.
  2. Attach a copy of your current valid certification or National Registry card.
  3. Email your completed renewal application and documents in PDF format to EMS Certifications.
  4. Pay the renewal fee. Call 415-473-6871 to pay by credit card.
  5. Wait for your updated certification card.

Submit your application and all documents by email only:

  1. Download the correct application form (initial or renewal).
  2. Scan and save all required documents as PDFs.
  3. Email everything to EMS Certification.
  4. Call 415-473-6871 to pay your fee by credit card, or mail a check or money order payable to “County of Marin.”
