Get help with lead exposure (Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention)

Need to know

  • Lead is a metal that can harm a child’s brain and body. Even small amounts can cause problems with learning, behavior, and growth. There is no safe level of lead.
  • Lead is often found in:
    • Homes built before 1978 (paint and dust)
    • Soil and drinking water
    • Some products like spices, pottery, or cosmetics
    • Certain jobs or hobbies
  • Most children with lead exposure do not look sick. A blood test is the only way to know.

Before you start

  • Write down where you think the exposure is happening (address or location)
  • Have your child’s blood lead test results ready, if you have them
  • Be ready to share your concerns or questions

  • Ask about lead risks at well-child visits (6 months to 6 years)
  • Test children at 12 and 24 months if they are in Medi-Cal
