Nutrition programs for older adults

Information and Assistance provides support with Health Coverage and Care, Financial Assistance, and Food and Nutrition for Older Adults and People with Disabilities.

About this service

Nutrition programs for older adults provide meals for people age 60 and older through home-delivered meals ("Meals on Wheels") and congregate meals served at community sites. Meals meet special nutritional requirements for older adults. There are no income requirements to participate; voluntary contributions are requested to help support the programs.

Who this service is for

  • People age 60 or older.
  • Home-delivered meals are for people who are homebound and/or frail.
  • Congregate meals are available to older adults at designated meal sites (see details below).
  • There are no income requirements to enroll, but you may be placed on a waiting list depending on need.

Details

Before you start

  • Have your name, date of birth, phone number, and address ready.
  • Be ready to answer health and nutrition-related questions during enrollment.

Need to know

  • You must be age 60 or older to enroll.
  • Home-delivered meals are for people who are homebound and/or frail.
  • Congregate meals are served at:
    • Albert J. Boro Community Center, San Rafael
    • Corte Madera Community Center
    • Dance Palace, Point Reyes Station
    • Margaret Todd Senior Center, Novato
    • San Geronimo Valley Community Center
    • San Rafael Community Center on B Street
  • There are no income requirements for either program.
  • All meals meet special nutritional requirements for older adults.
  • You may be asked to contribute $3.50 per home-delivered meal or $3.00 per congregate meal. Contributions are voluntary.
  • You may be placed on a waiting list, depending on need.

Home-delivered meals ("Meals on Wheels")

  1. Call (415) 473-INFO (4636) to start the screening and enrollment process.
  2. Answer the questions during the phone screening.
  3. If you are approved, choose a regular or vegetarian meal option.
  4. Be home for delivery. Meals cannot be left unattended and must be refrigerated promptly.

Congregate meals (except in West Marin)

  1. Call (415) 473-INFO (4636) to complete the yearly enrollment.
  2. Make weekly reservations. Reservations are due no later than the Thursday before the week you plan to attend.
  3. Go to the meal site at the time that you reserved.

West Marin sites

  1. For the San Geronimo Valley site, call 415-488-8888.
  2. For the Point Reyes Station site, email David.

What to expect after you contact us

If you leave a voicemail when you call, a social worker will return your call within 1 to 2 business days. You will get details about meal days and an approximate delivery time if you enroll in home-delivered meals.

If you need to cancel a home-delivered meal, call 415-473-6636 at least 7 days in advance. You can pause home-delivered meals for up to 4 weeks and restart by calling the same number.
