Get PrEP

Need to know

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a clinical prevention strategy that uses prescription medicine to help reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. When taken as directed, PrEP has been shown to greatly lower the chance of HIV infection for people who are at increased risk. PrEP is provided through clinics and health care providers; services may include risk assessment, HIV testing, medication prescription, and regular follow-up and laboratory monitoring.

PrEP is intended for people who are HIV-negative and at substantial risk of acquiring HIV. This can include, but is not limited to:

  • People with an HIV-positive sexual partner
  • People who have multiple sexual partners or engage in condomless sex with partners of unknown HIV status
  • People who inject drugs and share equipment
  • People who have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that indicates ongoing risk
  • Eligibility and clinical guidance are determined by a health care provider based on individual risk factors and medical history.
