  • The Public Guardian Office can be appointed by the Social Security Administration to manage funds for people who are incapable of managing their Social Security income.
  • The appointment of a representative payee can ensure that these funds are protected and managed appropriately.
  • The Public Guardian Office is only able to accept referrals to provide this service from Marin County Behavioral Health case management.

What to do

  • If you or someone you know needs a payee or new payee, for general information, please contact Social Security at 800-772-1213.
  • If you want to request that the Public Guardian be appointed payee, you need to start the referral process by contacting Marin County Behavioral Health at 888-818-1115.
  • Before you call, please gather information regarding the person's Social Security benefits. Include why the person might mismanage their benefits if a representative payee is not appointed.
