Overview and purpose

The Communicable Disease Prevention and Control unit receives reports of suspected or confirmed reportable diseases and conditions, investigates cases and outbreaks, provides control recommendations, and communicates with affected parties to prevent further transmission. Reporting helps the county identify trends, protect vulnerable populations, and coordinate necessary interventions.

Before you contact the Public Health Office

  • Write down the suspected disease, when it happened, and where it was reported.
  • Gather name of patient and details of lab tests.
  • Include close contacts, if you have them.

Important things to know

  • Some urgent public health reports are handled 24/7.
  • Non-urgent concerns are handled during business hours.

How to report or get guidance

If you are a health care provider and the issue is urgent outside of business hours, follow the after-hours instructions. If you are a community member or provider and the issue is not urgent, use the email or phone option listed for the program.

The California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) is a computer application that the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has implemented for web-based disease reporting and surveillance. Specified diseases and conditions are mandated by State laws and regulations to be reported by healthcare providers and laboratories to local public health authorities. What happens after you report

Public Health staff may contact you for more details or route your concern to the most appropriate program. The unit will determine whether investigation, testing, contact tracing, or control measures are needed based on the condition reported and the local public health assessment.
