About this service

The Marin County Veterans Service Office (VSO) verifies eligibility for California Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates.

DV license plates are issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and may provide certain benefits, such as exemptions from vehicle registration fees and Bay Area bridge tolls for eligible veterans.

Important:

  • The VSO verifies eligibility and completes required documentation
  • The DMV reviews the application and issues DV plates

Who this service is for

DV plates are for veterans whose disability is connected to military service and who meet one of the following conditions:

  • Have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
  • Are unable to move without the aid of an assistive device
  • Have loss of use of one or more limbs
  • Have permanent vision impairment as defined by California law

Additional notes:

  • DV plates are limited to one vehicle per eligible veteran
  • Final approval and issuance are completed by the DMV

Have the following available:

  • DD-214 (discharge papers)
  • California Driver License or ID
  • VA Benefits Summary Letter showing 100% service-connected disability rating

How to get your VA Benefits Summary Letter

You can:

If a VA Form 21-22 (Appointment of Representative) is on file, a Veterans Service Representative may also confirm your rating through authorized VA systems.

How the process works

  1. The VSO reviews your documents and verifies eligibility
  2. The VSO completes required DMV verification forms
  3. You submit the completed forms to the DMV
  4. The DMV reviews and issues DV plates (if approved)

Walk-in hours for DMV verification forms:

Monday – Tuesday
8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Closed 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

No appointment required for walk-in verification of DMV-related forms.
