Need to know
The Marin County Veterans Service Office (VSO) verifies eligibility for California Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates.
Eligibility
As a result of an injury or disease suffered while on active duty, meet one of the following conditions:
- 100% service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
- Unable to move without the aid of an assistive device.
- Loss of use of one or more limbs.
- Permanent blindness as defined in the California Welfare and Institutions Code §19153.
DV plates
- Limited to one vehicle per eligible veteran
- Exempt for payment of DMV vehicle registration fees
- Exempt for payment of Bay Area bridge tolls
Note:
- The VSO only verifies eligibility for DV plates. Disabled placards must be obtained separately through a physician and DMV.
Before you start
Required documents
Bring the following documents to the Marin County VSO:
- DD-214
- California Driver License or ID
- VA Benefits Summary Letter showing 100% service-connected disability

How to get a copy of award letters
If a VA Form 21-22 (Appointment of Representative) is on file, a Veterans Service Representative may also confirm your rating through authorized VA systems.
What to do
- Bring your required documents in person to the Marin County Veterans Service Office during our Walk-In Hours (Monday and Tuesday).
- The VSO verifies eligibility and prepares the required DMV Disabled Veteran plate paperwork.
- The veteran signs the form with an original (“wet”) signature.
- Take the completed paperwork to a DMV field office to complete the application.
Walk-in hours for DMV-related forms
Monday – Tuesday
8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Closed 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
No appointment required.
Visit the Marin County VSO with your required documents, to have your eligibility verified and receive the required DMV paperwork.
Then visit a DMV field office to complete the DV plate application.
