Supplemental Security Income Advocacy provides support with Financial Assistance for People with Disabilities and Older Adults.

About this service

Supplemental Security Income Advocacy (SSIA) helps eligible Marin County residents apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). SSIA staff provide screening, help file claims, and assist clients in gathering and organizing medical documentation and other records needed to support a disability claim. The program works with clients through the application process and coordinates medical appointments and documentation as needed.

Who this service is for

  • You must be age 18 or older and live in Marin County.
  • You must be receiving General Relief or CalWORKs.
  • You must have a chronic mental health or physical disability that keeps you from working for 12 months or more.
  • Be in current/continuous treatment.

Program overview

SSIA provides advocacy and assistance to eligible clients to pursue SSI and/or SSDI benefits. Staff guide clients through screening, filing, and gathering documents that support a claim, and coordinate with medical providers to obtain necessary records.

  • Screening to determine whether you meet program criteria and are likely to qualify for SSI/SSDI.
  • Assistance filing an SSI and/or SSDI claim.
  • Working with clients to gather medical documents and records that support claims.
  • Coordinating and supporting attendance at SSIA and medical appointments.

Before you start

  • List your medical providers and where you have received care.
  • Gather any medical records you already have.

How the process works

After referral and acceptance to the program, SSIA staff will guide you through screening, filing, and gathering documents that support your claim. The program will work with you and your medical providers to collect and organize evidence of your disability and treatment history. Clients are expected to attend SSIA appointments and any medical appointments arranged to support the claim.

  1. For referral, contact your worker.
  2. If you meet the criteria, an SSIA staff will help you file an SSI and/or SSDI claim.
  3. Work with staff to gather medical documents that support your claim.
  4. Attend all SSIA and medical appointments.
