About this service
Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) is a collaborative court program that connects justice-involved veterans with treatment and support services.
The program is led by the Marin County Superior Court in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and local service providers.
The Marin County Veterans Service Office (VSO) helps connect eligible veterans to the program and can assist with referrals and coordination, but does not determine eligibility or acceptance.
Who this service is for
This service is for veterans involved in the justice system who have a current or pending case in Marin County Superior Court.
Final acceptance into Veterans Treatment Court is determined by the Marin County Superior Court and the VTC team.
Details
What to expect
Veterans Treatment Court focuses on treatment and rehabilitation instead of traditional court processing.
If accepted into the program, participants may be required to:
- Attend regular court appearances
- Participate in treatment services
- Work with case managers and support providers
- Coordinate care through VA health services
The program is structured and monitored by the court. Participation requirements and timelines vary based on the individual case.
How the process works
Referrals to Veterans Treatment Court are typically made through:
- Defense attorneys
- Probation officers
- Court staff
- Partner agencies, including the VSO
As part of the referral process, forms may be required to allow coordination between the court and the VA. These may include:
- A referral form (such as MIL-100)
- Authorization to release health information
These forms allow the VA Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) Specialist to coordinate care and share information with the court and treatment providers.
Information that may be needed
To begin the referral process, you may be asked to provide:
- Veteran’s full name, date of birth, and Social Security number
- Marin County court case information
- Basic military service history
- DD-214 or discharge documents (if available)
Additional details
- Participation is voluntary but court-supervised
- Not all veterans will qualify for the program
- The court—not the VSO—makes all final decisions regarding acceptance and participation
