Need to know

The Marin County Veterans Service Office (VSO) assists veterans, dependents, and survivors in accessing federal, state, and local benefits.

  • Services are free.
  • Appointments available by phone or in person.
  • Eligibility varies by program and individual circumstances.
  • Be prepared to describe the type of assistance or benefit you are seeking.
  • If you are contacting the office on behalf of someone else, claims generally cannot be submitted without proof that the veteran or claimant has authorized it.

Before you start

  • Have the veteran’s basic identifying information
    • Full Name
    • Date of birth
    • Social Security Number
  • Gather the veteran’s DD-214 or other discharge documents, if available.
  • For survivors or dependents (as applicable) gather copies of:
    • Veteran death certificate
    • Marriage certificate, any divorce decrees for parties
    • Birth certificates for children

  • First-Time Clients

    You may need to complete VA Form 21-22 (Appointment of Veterans Service Organization as Claimant’s Representative) if representation is required.

    Some forms or requests may be submitted directly and may not require a VA Form 21-22.

    • Veterans complete the form as "The Veteran".
    • Survivors of a deceased veteran complete the form as "A Claimant".

  • Processing times vary by benefit type and the reviewing agency.
